Do you have a book in you? If you feel you might, that’s why I have this series of author interviews and why I created the Spirit-Led Authoring Course.
This segment: Writing Impactful Children’s Books

One of my favorite things to do is to locate educational and enlightening children’s books and gift them to our grandchildren for birthdays or Christmas. Today, I’m spotlighting two books that I’ll be sharing with my grandchildren, written by one of my favorite authors, Julie Coulter Bellon.

In this enlightening interview, award-winning romantic suspense novelist Julie Coulter Bellon shares her passion project: two award-winning children’s books that introduce and celebrate the Métis people, one of Canada’s First Nations. Drawing from her Métis heritage and the inspiring legacy of her grandmother, the first Métis female Senator in Canada, Julie discusses how these books aim to educate and preserve the beautiful traditions and language of the Métis people.

Watch as Julie explains the importance of unique character illustrations, the storytelling traditions of the Métis culture, and the urgent need to protect the Métis language. These books not only won the Best of State award for children’s books but continue to inspire and educate young readers about diversity and cultural heritage.

About the Books

Thelma: A Métis Girl Who Was Born in a Storm

Thelma: A Métis Girl Who Was Born in a Storm

by Julie Coulter Bellon
Illustrated by Mickey Brooks

Thelma’s favorite time of day is after dinner when her family gathers around the fireplace to be together and hear her father’s stories. The story she loves best is the one about the night she was born—in a fierce storm! Her father says he always knew she would grow up to be as fierce as the storm she was born in, but her mother tells her there’s more to the story. Join Thelma and her Métis family and learn what that something more is!

A Métis Christmas: Thelma's Gift

Métis Christmas: Thelma’s Gift

by Julie Coulter Bellon
Illustrated by Mickey Brooks

A beautiful introduction to Métis culture and traditions . . .

Thelma, a young Metis girl, can hardly wait for Christmas, and it is the night before the big day. Her family is celebrating with lots of food, including Thelma’s favorite jam with bannock, and her father will dress in his traditional clothing to tell them the ancestor stories—but all Thelma wants to do is her best, most fancy, jigging dance. Stopping for a moment so her grandmother can read the story of the Christ child’s birth, Thelma wonders what she could have given the baby had she been there that special night—and then her heart tells her what gift she can give right now!
